Life in the Slow Lane

I would like to do something a little different with this blog and to make some observations / comments about medicine and beyond.

First I would like to give you  some of my favorite quotes / expressions of 2016:

#1. Don’t quit your day dream.

#2. Gracious plenty. ( Southern expression ).

#3. Atrociously  false.   T. Roosevelt.

#3. We are here because some of us are not all there.

#4. Law of unintended consequences kicked in.

#5 .”Wars are money.” Now that certainly is an interesting observation / opinion. Certainly war means greater profits for our industrial-military complex. You know, the folks that President Eisenhower warned us about.  As far as I am aware our military has never been audited.

#6. Way - weary.

#7. My time and my heart are two areas where I could share more.

#8. Life shrinks or expands according to ones courage.

#9.  Kin till  kan’t.

#10. Twaddled son.

#11. The simplest acts of kindness are by far more powerful than a thousand heads bowing in prayer.   M. Gandhi.

#12. The mind sees what it wants to see.

#13. When you don’t know the answer, question the question.

#14. Bed buggers. Expression for folks who move furniture for a living ( movers ).

#15. The ideas that have lighted my way have been kindness, beauty, and truth.  A. Einstein.

#16. Momento mori  ---  Latin expression ---remember that you must die.   Also a reminder of human failures or errors.

#17.  High water rescue.

#18. We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give. W. Churchill

#19. Enjoy today, it will never come again.

#20. When I feed a child everyone calls me a saint, when I ask why is this child hungry, everyone calls me a socialist.

#21. Anosognosia – when you don’t  realize you have an illness.

#22. An eye for an eye ---- makes the whole world blind. M. Gandhi.

#23. Shysters  and quacks were in control of so called medicine.

#24.. “Clothes make the man” observed  Mark Twain. “ Naked people have little or no influence in society ”.

#25. The key to success is never stop learning.

#26.” Alfalfa / sassafiass”. ( Spanky And Our Gang ). I suggested to the  youngest daughter she name our granddaughter “ sassafiass “ but so far no go. Of course “ sassanqua” wouldn’t be bad.

#27. Do not judge my path if you have not walked my journey.

Now an interesting passage from Victoria Sweet MD in God’s Hotel:  “By the time medicine got to me, however words like spiritus and anima had been banished from the medical vocabulary. I had no concepts for describing what I’d seen. Perhaps it had been autopsy – from the Greek auto-opsia: seeing for oneself – that brought about the disappearance of those words from the Western vocabulary.”

In almost every setting of great poverty,  health / healthcare is dreadful. One of the main reasons  over 600 persons died in Haiti with Hurricane Matthew is poor ( non-existent ) infrastructure.

It is more important to do it right than to do it fast. Probably good  advice for MSICS.

“A blind man is a poor man, and blind a poor man is; for the former seeth no man, and the latter no man sees”. Poetic Aphorisms.   Longfellow.

People desire control. Change is constantly occurring. Fear is inside you. Stress is outside you. Stress implies a  lack of control. Cultivate your courage to control your stress. Usually you can not control what happens to you but it is your choice how you perceive / response to the event.

Lastly my favorite book for 2016:  1491 New Revelations Of  The Americas Before Columbus by Charles C. Mann.  Jammed packed with amazing information.

Well I hope my ramblings were not too over the top. Happy New Year to everyone.

Do good and avoid the limelight.

Peace, Baxter
